After the exams, these were the movies that I watched and my comments. The
Internet Movie Database is a good place to search what the movies are about.
The marathon:
Hostel - A sick hobby it was. People around me call it half porn flick, half bloody gory flick. I couldn't agree more. Since most have watched it, I chose it first. For the first half, people who came by the lounge got scared that I was watching Hostel. And so I was lonely, watching the first half, which was a porn flick. The second half, more people came, came in to watch but got scared and ran out. It was really funny. Anyway, it's about this bunch of backpackers who travelled to Europe looking for sex, but got drugged and ended as torture subjects for rich people who got kicks outta it.
Crash - This was the only oscar movie I haven't watched this year. And it certainly deserved the Best Picture. Who the hell said Brokeback will win it. If I had see both at the same time, I would have given it to Crash, no questions asked. The movie talks about how a few lives get intertwined with each other and that all are just trying to get by their lives, not knowing their actions would affect one another. A few touchy issues were covered. Nice touches to the small details in the movie made it for me. Also as the name suggests, it all starts with a crash, ends in a crash, and how lives can crash down and against one another.
Saw2 - If you saw how brillant Saw was, Saw 2 had the same formula. Mad serial killer making his victims play a game and paying for their sins. Good twist in the end, but not as good as the first. Good character development as always.
Doom - It was getting late, and it's time for no brainers. Doom is just shoot them up standard. It was gonna get a B+ in the B-movie category until when the First-person-shooter view came on. Most of the movie was not bad, had the style and feel of standard shoot-them-all movie. They even had the science and suspense to top it off. But when FPS came on, I was laughing all the way. It was so fake. And that was the end of the movie, it killed it.
Eurotrip - This one didn't even have science inside. It was all crazy teen flick style. Full of sex jokes and sex in mind, the usual American pie style. Find a reason to go Europe and the adventure begins.
The rest of the list was what I had watched so far.
Hoodwinked - Cool animated film. Little red riding hood with a twist. Themes were quite mature, not really for the kids. The characters were funny and cool. Good attempt.
8 women - French show which had countless rave reviews. After watching it, the only thing that got to me was the singing. Felt funny and kinda outta place, maybe it's norm in France. Other than that, watching 8 popular French actresses in a single movie was amazing. The story was quite interesting, but it was the 8 women who had me glued to the end.
Skyhigh - Good attempt from Disney. They should more cool characters like that, and a witty script to go with that. If not, Pixar and Dreamworks will kill it. Think it's for kids? I think in the end, everyone who watched it before said it was "not bad".
Tom Yum Goong - They say it was the sequel to Ong Bak, but I watched it first. I saw it in Thai without English subtitles, but my friend said you could watch it without english, "just see the action can liao". He was true, it about how a village boy saving his pet baby elephant and destroying the bad guys and the ivory trade. Good action as promised.
Memoirs Of A Geisha - It was much talked about in it's hey day. Beginning of the movie was ooh aah, nice movie, eye opener to the culture. Then slowly, the movie slowed down and became such a bore. Paced could have been better. Zhang Ziyi still as pretty as ever.
Ong Bak - After Tom Yum Goong, I went to download Ong Bak. As they always say, the original still the best. The cast is the same, but the characters different. So the sequel it wasn't, just that the cast remain intact. The action and stunts here were much better and story much better. One point was that the main bad guy looked like the Malaysian Prime Minister. Dunno whether was it a pun or not, but funny.
A Chinese Tall Story - They said it was lame, and boy it was. This could be compared to Alone In The Dark. These movies should never see the light of day man. Still I always tell myself you gotta watch shitty movies to appreciate the good ones much more and cherish them.
Runaway Jury - Well scripted, good cast, good show. John Grisham never fails to impress.
Nanny Mcphee - Kiddy show. But a nice feel good movie. Cool lines learnt in there.
The Long Weekend - This one had more sex in mind than Eurotrip. Meant only for guys to watch. Really.
American Pie Band Camp - Bunch of new cast star in this one. There goes their career man. I can swear that I was sympathising with their careers when I watched it. At least they should have tried a teen screamer flick. Watch only if you want to catch the R(A) parts.
Finding Neverland - Interesting story of how Peter Pan was inspired. Johnny Depp impresses again. Nice movie, quite inspirational I must say.
That's all for now. More to come.
THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE
